Where did the term Club Chair come from?

They popped up along the back streets of London in the 18th Century. They were the Gentlemen's Clubs with names like The Athenaeum, Boodles, Carlton, Garrick, Hurlington, East India, Savile, and Travellers. They were private and the members anonymous, but we know from Dr. Watson that Sherlock Holmes' brother Mycroft attended the Diogenes Club, and Phileas Fogg, of Around the World in 80 Days fame, was a member of the Reform Club. Each one had a common interest, politics, sports, theatre, and even social clubs formed where members could kick back and play cards. Their greatest contribution to the world of furniture, was and is the club chair, that thickly upholstered armchair mostly of leather that was scrumptious to sit in and long lasting.

Leopold's Chair

Leopold's chair is a Stickley favorite, defined by its gently reclining back and tufted leather or fabric.  Named for Gustav Stickley's younger brother. Leopold, co-founder of Stickley Furniture. Leopold was himself a talented furniture designer, earning during his lifetime the title "Revered Dean of Cabinetmakers".

In all, there were five Stickley brothers involved in the business at one time or another - Gustav, Leopold, Albert, Charles, and John George Stickley. Each contribute his own talents, each adhered to the old Flemish motto which became Stickley's, "To the best of my ability" or "Als ik kan".
